Candy Flavored Racism
Who doesn't like racism in their movies?
If Candyman becomes a franchise of hate, would that be okay if it were the opposite way? Imagine woke culture but with a black tilt. I assume Jordan was going for fan service when writing this script, but he could have done better. There was no prejudice against white people in Anthony’s character, but when he learns about the area that was gentrified, he has some opinions. Still not enough hatred for my taste, but he showed a hint of resentment. If the writers leaned more into that dynamic, it could have been engaging, but I think they did not want to be as blunt. Dancing around the subject would work if it was not so obvious, like the lady who critiques Anthony’s recent paintings. Watching the recent movie of the Candyman franchise has me questioning. Were the previous movies like this and did the Candyman have the same motives? Is this like black people’s secret hidden powers to kill white people without fault because at the end scene and most where Candyman comes to play seems to always find the lighter melanin? What Get Out did was phenomenal, but with Candyman, it felt the writers were scared to go any further with the bitterness some black people still hold on to this day. The movie was okay, but where are they going with this? Genocide of the WHITES or, you know, a tool for black people to use when they dislike a certain white person. It is a weird movie that wants to promote hate but is not too direct. Since it’s black people, it’s allowed. I love Jordan Peele, but he and the other writers missed the mark with this one. Also, I get it. White people did black people wrong in the past and to a degree present, but if hatred continues to fuel at least one side of this horrible history and present, where will the end be? Not saying a movie cannot explore that kind of hate, but if it were the other way around, I do not think the black community would appreciate a movie like that.
